http://a.img-dpreview.com/reviews/sonydsch1/images/3q-001.jpg

The new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1 (DSCH1) is the first Sony digital camera to combine a 12x Optical zoom lens with a Super Steady Shot optical image stabiliser, 5.1 effective Megapixel resolution, a large 2.5-inch LCD screen, fast response and full manual exposure control.

Far off subjects pose no problem to the new super strength 12x Optical Zoom lens on the Sony DSC-H1. This superb Sony lens is capable of bringing up the furthest objects in pin sharp detail, but can also handle those nearest to the camera too, thanks to its 2cm Macro function.

The unique Sony Super Steady Shot ensures shots are rock solid, even at the furthest zoom ratio. A 5.1 effective Megapixel resolution Super HAD CCD matches the high optical strength, so not only do you have a large zoom with the DSC-H1, you'll have the option for larger prints too.

The Sony Real Imaging Processor further enhances the shooting experience, keeping pictures sharp, colours real, ensuring an extremely rapid camera operation, and long STAMINA battery life. For even further subjects a 24x Precision Digital Zoom is on hand, as well as an astonishing 48x Smart Zoom in VGA mode.

Stable shooting
The Sony DSC-H1 digital camera is packed with innovations to take the fuss out of photography.

One of these is the Sony developed Super Steady Shot, a built-in optical image stabiliser that automatically compensates for 'hand-shake' and vibrations to produce sharp digital pictures every time.

The large and bright 2.5-inch LCD screen has a higher contrast ratio for a more realistic and vivid display of your images. This combined with a new non-glare finish and low reflection coating; the viewing angle is greatly improved by an impressive 25% - great for reviewing and sharing your images.

The logical menu screens offer enlarged function icons for ease of use.
You can use Sony Memory Stick and Memory Stick PRO for fast and efficient image storage, but there's also 32MB of internal memory to fall back on when your Memory Stick is full or when you forget to bring one with you.

There's no need to worry about the battery running low either, as in conjunction with the Real Imaging Processor, Sony's energy-efficient Stamina system allows 260 shots* on one charge when using the two supplied rechargeable batteries.

Familiar camera feel, Compact usability
Both the menu screens and the on-camera controls give access to a wide range of functions for both ease of use and professional tools for those wishing to be more creative in their photography. There is a range of exposure modes from fully manual to fully automatic modes as well as adjustable White Balance and several auto-focus settings such as Continuous AF and Flexible Spot AF.

ISO, sharpness, contrast and saturation settings can be customised and light metering configured for flexibility and creativity in various shooting situations.

There are also multiple automatic functions to allow point-and-shoot simplicity while one of the seven Scene Selection modes will be suitable for almost any picture setting or occasion. Just set the mode to landscape, twilight portrait or high-speed shutter for example and you'll be sure of a perfectly exposed picture suited to those conditions.

Video is also possible, using Sony's MPEG Movie VX Fine to record high quality VGA video at up to 30 frames a second (when using optional Memory Stick PRO), which is ideal for playing back full screen on TV.

In addition, the camera also offers extensive connectivity, including Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and the PictBridge** facility for printing your photos directly to a compatible printer without the need for a PC.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1 will ship throughout Europe at the end of June 2005.

NOTES

About the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1 uses an enhanced Super HAD CCD to deliver a 5.1 effective Megapixel resolution, working in tandem with the Sony Real Imaging Processor to produce high-resolution, high quality images. The outstanding feature of this model is the 12x Optical Zoom lens with Sony Super Steady Shot, ideal for keeping objects in pin sharp focus as you frame and zoom in to your shot.

This lens gives a focal length of 36-432mm (35mm conversion) at F2.8-3.7, while also offering a 2cm Macro shooting facility for close-up work. A substantial 24x Precision Digital Zoom supplements the Optical Zoom, as well as a Smart Zoom facility that allows 48x shooting in VGA mode.

In addition, the high zoom ratio benefits from the years of experience Sony has in image stabilisation technology, Super Steady Shot. This highly effective feature ensures that your photographs will not be blurred due to 'hand-shake' or from encountering similar small vibrations during shooting.

The Cyber-shot DSC-H1 digital camera features a large and bright high quality 2.5-inch LCD screen (115K pixel) for viewing images, allowing access to menu options and framing the shots - an electronic viewfinder is also featured.

The camera offers a substantial amount of flexible and creative shooting features including program auto, shutter speed and aperture priority exposure modes as well as fully manual and fully automatic exposure control. In addition options such as Flexible Spot and Continuous AF, or Multi Pattern, Spot and Centre-weighted Light Metering lift the Cyber-shot H1 above the ordinary feature set of a consumer digital camera.

Other options include a Histogram display, Auto Exposure Bracketing, Multi Burst shooting and settings for ISO and Sharpness, Contrast and Saturation levels.

For ease of use the Cyber-shot DSC-H1 has seven Scene Selection modes that are specially preset for such environments as candle light, twilight, shooting landscapes and at the beach, or can be used for occasions demanding a high-speed shutter. For added usability, a new animated and enlarged icon feature is activated whenever the user changes the Macro, Flash or Self-Timer settings. The camera also features an AF Illuminator that aids auto-focusing in low-light situations.

The Cyber-shot DSC-H1 supports Sony Memory Stick and Memory Stick PRO, as well as 32MB of internal memory. When equipped with Sony Memory Stick PRO, the Cyber-shot H1 is also capable of recording high quality VGA video in the high-resolution MPEG Movie VX Fine (640x480, 30 frames per second).

The Cyber-shot DSC-H1 features Hi-Speed USB 2.0 to quickly transfer images to a compatible PC for editing, where users can take advantage of the software supplied with the camera. It also features the PictBridge** interface, which allows direct connection to a compatible PictBridge** printer, outputting images without any need for a PC.

About the Real Imaging Processor and STAMINA
Sony's STAMINA power management technology allows up to an impressive 290* shots to be taken on the Cyber-shot DSC-H1 with one charge of the optional NiMH (2500mAh) batteries. The Sony DSC-H1 can also sustain a respectable 260* shots using the two supplied NiMH (2100mAh) rechargeable batteries. The Real Imaging Processor, designed by Sony to control operations on its Cyber-shot range of cameras, also contributes to the energy efficiency for the Cyber-shot DSC-H1. It also reduces the playback and shooting interval, and improves the shutter and release time lag enabling faster shooting. Among the other enhancements offered by this chip are more accurate colour reproduction, improved auto focus performance and a greater signal to noise ratio for clearer images, as well as enhanced auto white balance and auto exposure.

About the Cyber-shot Accessories
Supplied accessories for the Cyber-shot DSC-H1 include two NH-AA-DA rechargeable batteries and charger, a lens hood, lens adaptor ring, shoulder strap, AV and USB 2.0 cables, and a software CD containing Sony Picture Package, ImageMixer and USB Drivers.
